Everything you need to know about Commonwealth Rent Assistance (CRA)
What is Commonwealth Rent Assistance?
Commonwealth Rent Assistance (CRA) is a non-taxable income supplement paid to eligible people who rent in the private market. You must receive an eligible Centrelink payment (like FTB Part A, JobSeeker, or Age Pension) and pay rent above the minimum threshold. CRA is paid as part of your qualifying payment on the same schedule -- it is not a standalone payment but an add-on component.
How is CRA Calculated?
CRA is paid at the rate of 75 cents for every dollar of rent above the minimum rent threshold, up to the maximum rate. The thresholds and maximum rates vary depending on your situation (single, couple, number of children). Once your rent reaches the ceiling where the maximum CRA is payable, further increases in rent do not increase your CRA -- it is capped at the maximum rate for your household type.
Sharers
If you share accommodation (share a major area like a kitchen, bathroom or living area), your CRA maximum rate is reduced to two-thirds of the standard rate. This applies to single people without children who share their home with others. Couples and families sharing with others are assessed differently.
Who is Eligible?
You may be eligible for CRA if you pay rent (including lodging, site fees for caravans and mobile homes, mooring fees for boats, and fees for retirement villages) and you receive an eligible Centrelink payment. Government housing tenants are generally not eligible, nor are people paying rent to a close relative.
