Understanding HECS-HELP Repayments

New marginal repayment system (2025-26)

From 2025-26, HECS-HELP uses a new marginal repayment system instead of the old percentage-of-income approach. Repayments are calculated as: 15 cents per dollar earned between $67,000 and $125,000, plus 17 cents per dollar between $125,000 and $179,285. Above $179,285, you pay 10% of your total repayment income.

What counts as repayment income?

Your HECS repayment income includes your taxable income plus any reportable fringe benefits, total net investment loss, and reportable super contributions. This is usually higher than your taxable income alone.

CPI Indexation

Your HECS debt is indexed each year by CPI on 1 June. The government has capped indexation at the lower of CPI or the Wage Price Index. This means your debt may grow if repayments don't keep up with indexation.

ATO-Aligned: Thresholds and rates reflect the new 2025-26 marginal HECS-HELP repayment system.
