Understanding the Age Pension means tests
Age Pension Eligibility
To qualify for the Age Pension, you must be at least 67 years old and an Australian resident. The payment is means-tested through both an income test and an assets test -- the test that produces the lower payment rate is applied.
Income Test
Singles can earn up to $204 per fortnight before their pension is reduced. For every dollar over the free area, the pension reduces by 50 cents. Couples have a combined income free area of $360 per fortnight.
Assets Test
The assets test threshold depends on whether you own your home. For homeowner singles the threshold is $314,000; for non-homeowners it is $566,000. Assets above the threshold reduce the pension by $3.00 per fortnight for every $1,000 over the limit.
Limiting Test
Both the income test and the assets test are applied. The test that results in the lower pension amount is the one used to determine your actual payment. This is called the "limiting test." If both tests allow the maximum pension, the full rate is paid.
