Understanding Austudy and Youth Allowance payments

Youth Allowance

Youth Allowance is for young people aged 16-24 who are studying full-time, undertaking an Australian Apprenticeship, or looking for work. The rate depends on whether you are independent, live at home, and your age. The maximum fortnightly rate for independent students is $762.70 and for those living at home is $455.20.

Austudy

Austudy is for students and Australian Apprentices aged 25 and over. It provides a fortnightly payment of up to $762.70 to help with living costs while studying full-time or doing an approved apprenticeship.

Income Test

You can earn up to $150 per fortnight before your payment is affected. For income between $150 and $256, your payment reduces by 50 cents for each dollar over $150. For income above $256, your payment reduces by 60 cents for each dollar over $256. This means higher earners may receive a reduced payment or no payment at all.

Student Income Bank

The Student Income Bank allows you to accumulate credits when you earn less than the income free area. These credits can offset future income, letting you earn more before your payment is reduced. The maximum balance is $12,000.
