The 40% Rebate
FamilyBoost refunds 40% of the fees you pay to a licensed ECE provider, up to $1,560.00 every quarter (3 months). That is up to $6,240 a year. Fees are counted after other help like 20 Hours ECE and the Work and Income Childcare Subsidy.
Income Abatement
If your household earns more than $35,000.00 a quarter ($140,000 a year), the $1,560.00 cap reduces by 7 cents for every extra dollar. You get nothing once income reaches $57,286.00 a quarter (just under $230,000 a year).
Claimed Quarterly
You claim through myIR after each quarter ends (31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 31 December). Inland Revenue works out your quarterly income as the greater of your salary and wages for the quarter, or your other income from your tax return divided by 4.
IRD-Aligned: Uses the expanded FamilyBoost rates that apply to quarters ending after 1 July 2025, paid from October 2025 onwards.
What is FamilyBoost?
FamilyBoost is a payment from Inland Revenue (IRD) that gives you back some of your early childhood education (ECE) fees. It refunds 40% of the fees you pay, up to $1,560 every 3 months. That works out at up to $6,240 a year, or about $120 a week.
Who can get FamilyBoost?
You can get FamilyBoost if you care for a child aged 5 or under, you pay fees to a licensed ECE provider, you are a New Zealand tax resident, and your household income is under $57,286 a quarter (just under $230,000 a year). If you have a partner, only one of you can register.
How do I claim FamilyBoost?
You claim every 3 months through your myIR account. The quarters end on 31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 31 December. Keep your ECE invoices — many providers now send fee details straight to Inland Revenue, which makes claiming easier.
Which childcare fees count?
Fees from a licensed ECE provider count after any other help is taken off, such as 20 Hours ECE or the Work and Income Childcare Subsidy. Optional charges like meals or nappies can count, but donations do not.
Why is my rebate less than 40% of my fees?
If your household earns more than $35,000 a quarter ($140,000 a year), the maximum rebate shrinks by 7 cents for every extra dollar you earn. It runs out completely once income reaches $57,286 a quarter. Your rebate is always the lower of 40% of your fees or your abated maximum.
When did the FamilyBoost rates change?
The scheme became more generous for quarters ending after 1 July 2025. The rebate rose from 25% to 40% of fees, the cap rose from $975 to $1,560 a quarter, and the income limit rose from $45,000 to $57,286 a quarter. The first payments at the new rates were made from October 2025.
