Who is eligible?
To be eligible for government-funded paid parental leave, you must have worked for the same employer for at least 6 months, averaging at least 10 hours per week. Self-employed people can also qualify if they meet similar criteria.
How is the payment calculated?
PPL is based on your ordinary weekly pay or average weekly earnings, whichever is higher, capped at $712.17 per week before tax. The payment is made for 26 weeks and is taxable income (PAYE is deducted).
Can leave be shared?
The primary carer can transfer some or all of the 26 weeks to their spouse or partner. Both parents can also take unpaid extended leave in addition to paid parental leave.
Government Rate: The maximum weekly rate of $712.17 applies from 1 July 2024. PPL is paid by IRD (not your employer) and is subject to PAYE tax.
