Understanding KiwiSaver

What is KiwiSaver?

KiwiSaver is New Zealand's voluntary workplace savings scheme for retirement. You choose a contribution rate of 3%, 4%, 6%, 8%, or 10% of your gross salary. Your employer must contribute a minimum of 3% on top of your salary.

What is ESCT?

Employer Superannuation Contribution Tax (ESCT) is tax deducted from your employer's KiwiSaver contributions before they reach your fund. The ESCT rate depends on your combined salary plus employer contribution, and ranges from 10.5% to 39%.

Government contribution

The government contributes 50 cents for every $1 you contribute, up to a maximum of $521.43 per year (for the year ending 30 June). To receive the full amount, you need to contribute at least $1,042.86 per year.

IRD-Aligned: KiwiSaver rates and ESCT brackets are for the 2025-26 tax year. Government contribution eligibility requires being 18+ and an NZ tax resident.
