Understanding Business Deductions

Claiming business deductions

You can claim deductions for expenses incurred in earning your business income. The expense must be directly related to your business and you must have records (receipts, invoices) to substantiate your claims. You cannot claim personal expenses or expenses that have been reimbursed.

Home office and vehicle

Home office is calculated at the ATO fixed rate of 67 cents per hour. Vehicle expenses use the cents per km method at 88 cents per km, capped at 5,000 km per year. You must keep a record of your hours worked from home and business km driven.

Tax saving estimate

Your tax saving is the difference between the tax you would pay on your gross income versus the tax on your income after deductions. The actual saving depends on your marginal tax rate -- higher earners save more per dollar of deductions.

Record-keeping requirements

The ATO requires you to keep records of all business expenses for at least five years. This includes receipts, invoices, bank statements, and logbooks. Digital records are acceptable. If audited, you must be able to substantiate every deduction claimed.

ATO-Aligned: Uses current ATO rates for home office and vehicle deductions. Keep detailed records for all claimed expenses. For complex situations, consult a registered tax agent.
