Understanding Bonus Tax in New Zealand

How are bonuses taxed in New Zealand?

In New Zealand, bonuses are treated as ordinary income and taxed at your marginal PAYE rate. There is no special "bonus tax" -- your bonus is simply added to your annual income and taxed progressively through the PAYE brackets (10.5%, 17.5%, 30%, 33%, 39%).

What about ACC earner's levy?

Your bonus is also subject to the ACC earner's levy of 1.53% on earnings up to $142,283. This is deducted from your pay alongside PAYE.

Can I reduce tax on my bonus?

You can increase your KiwiSaver contribution rate (up to 10%) to divert more of your bonus to retirement savings. While this reduces your take-home pay, it grows tax-efficiently in your KiwiSaver fund and attracts employer contributions.

IRD-Aligned: This calculator uses official IRD PAYE rates for the 2025-26 tax year. The actual PAYE withholding on your bonus payment may differ -- see your payslip for withholding amounts.
