Understanding Parental Leave Pay

Government Parental Leave Pay

The Australian Government provides up to 26 weeks of Parental Leave Pay at the national minimum wage rate of $915.80 per week (before tax). This can be shared between eligible parents and taken flexibly.

Eligibility

To be eligible, each parent must individually earn $175,000.00 or less per financial year. You must also meet a work test (have worked at least 330 hours in the 13 months before birth/adoption), and be the primary carer of the child.

Sharing between parents

Both parents can share the 26 weeks. Each parent must individually meet the income test. You can take the leave at the same time or at different times in the first 2 years. A "keeping in touch" provision allows up to 10 days of work during the payment period.

ATO-Aligned: Rates are current as of 2025-26. Parental Leave Pay is taxable income and will be included in your annual tax return. Contact Services Australia for a full eligibility assessment.
