When can I claim Social Security benefits?
You can claim Social Security retirement benefits as early as age 62, but your benefit will be permanently reduced. Full retirement age (FRA) is 67 for those born in 1960 or later. You can delay benefits until age 70 to receive delayed retirement credits, which increase your benefit by 8% per year beyond FRA.
What is full retirement age (FRA)?
Full retirement age is the age at which you are entitled to your full (unreduced) Social Security benefit. For people born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67. Claiming before FRA reduces your benefit; claiming after FRA increases it through delayed retirement credits.
How is the Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) calculated?
PIA is calculated from your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME) using a formula with bend points. In 2025, the first $1,174 of AIME is multiplied by 90%, amounts between $1,174 and $7,078 by 32%, and amounts above $7,078 by 15%. This progressive formula provides a higher replacement rate for lower earners.
Does delaying Social Security increase my benefit?
Yes. For each year you delay claiming beyond your full retirement age (up to age 70), your benefit increases by about 8% per year through delayed retirement credits. This means claiming at 70 instead of 67 increases your benefit by approximately 24%.
