Understanding US Income Tax

What are the 2025 federal income tax brackets?

For 2025, the seven federal income tax brackets for single filers are: 10% ($0-$11,925), 12% ($11,925-$48,475), 22% ($48,475-$103,350), 24% ($103,350-$197,300), 32% ($197,300-$250,525), 35% ($250,525-$626,350), and 37% (over $626,350). Married filing jointly brackets are roughly double.

What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

Your marginal tax rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of income -- the highest bracket you fall into. Your effective tax rate is the actual percentage of your total income paid in tax. Because the US uses progressive brackets, your effective rate is always lower than your marginal rate.

What is the standard deduction for 2025?

The 2025 standard deduction is $15,000 for single filers and married filing separately, $30,000 for married filing jointly, and $22,500 for head of household. You can choose to itemize deductions instead if they exceed the standard deduction.

How does state income tax work?

State income tax varies significantly. Nine states have no income tax at all. Some states use a flat rate (e.g., Illinois at 4.95%), while others use progressive brackets similar to the federal system (e.g., California ranges from 1% to 13.3%). State tax is calculated separately from federal tax.
