Understanding Payroll Taxes

What payroll taxes does an employer pay?

Employers must pay the employer share of FICA (6.2% Social Security + 1.45% Medicare), FUTA (0.6% on the first $7,000 of each employee's wages after credits), and state unemployment insurance (SUTA). The employer FICA contribution mirrors the employee contribution.

What is FUTA?

The Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) tax is a 6.0% tax on the first $7,000 of each employee's wages, but most employers receive a 5.4% credit for state unemployment taxes paid, resulting in a net FUTA rate of 0.6%. This funds federal unemployment programs.

How often must payroll taxes be deposited?

The IRS requires either monthly or semi-weekly deposit schedules based on your tax liability. Monthly depositors must deposit by the 15th of the following month. Semi-weekly depositors must deposit within 1-3 business days depending on the pay date. Deposits are made via EFTPS.
