Understanding Dividend Taxes

What is the difference between qualified and ordinary dividends?

Qualified dividends are paid by US corporations (or qualifying foreign corporations) on stock held for at least 61 days during the 121-day period around the ex-dividend date. They are taxed at the lower long-term capital gains rates (0%, 15%, or 20%). Ordinary (non-qualified) dividends are taxed at your regular income tax rates, which can be as high as 37%.

What are the qualified dividend tax rates for 2025?

For 2025, qualified dividends are taxed at 0% if your taxable income is below $48,350 (single) or $96,700 (married filing jointly), 15% up to $533,400 (single) or $600,050 (MFJ), and 20% above those thresholds. High earners may also owe the 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax.

What is the Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT)?

The NIIT is a 3.8% surtax on investment income (including dividends, capital gains, and interest) that applies when your modified adjusted gross income exceeds $200,000 for single filers or $250,000 for married filing jointly. The tax applies to the lesser of your net investment income or the amount by which MAGI exceeds the threshold.
