Understanding Day Rates

How do I calculate my day rate?

Divide your desired annual income by the number of working days in a year. For example, if you want to earn $120,000 per year and plan to work 230 days, your day rate would be $120,000 / 230 = approximately $522 per day. Remember to account for vacation, sick days, and non-billable time.

How many working days are in a year?

A typical year has about 260 weekdays (52 weeks x 5 days), but most consultants use 220-235 working days after accounting for holidays, vacation, and sick days. 230 is a common benchmark. Some freelancers use as low as 200 days to build in more buffer.

What is a typical consulting day rate in the US?

Consulting day rates vary widely by industry and experience. Junior consultants might charge $400-$800/day, mid-level $800-$1,500/day, and senior/specialist consultants $1,500-$3,000+ per day. Technology consultants in major cities often charge $1,000-$2,500/day. Your rate should reflect your expertise, market demand, and overhead costs.

Note: This calculator shows the pre-tax rate needed to reach your income target. Remember to also account for self-employment taxes (15.3%), health insurance, and business expenses when setting your actual rate.
