What is GST?
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a 15% tax on most goods and services sold in New Zealand. Businesses registered for GST charge GST on their sales and can claim back the GST they pay on business purchases.
Who needs to register?
You must register for GST if your turnover exceeds $60,000 in any 12-month period, or is expected to. You can voluntarily register if your turnover is below this threshold.
GST Returns
Once registered, you must file GST returns -- typically every two months or six months depending on your turnover. You report GST collected on sales and claim back GST paid on purchases. The difference is paid to or refunded by IRD.
IRD-Aligned: New Zealand GST rate is 15% for the 2025-26 period. Some items are GST-exempt including financial services, residential rent, and exported goods.
