Working Family Payment (WFP)
WFP is a weekly tax-free payment for employees with children. You must work at least 38 hours per fortnight (19 hours per week). WFP is 60% of the difference between the income limit for your family size and your actual net family income.
Income limits
The income limit increases with each additional child. For 1 child it is €591/week, for 2 children €692/week, and so on. Your assessable income includes wages, salaries, and other regular income after tax and PRSI.
How to apply
Apply online at mywelfare.ie or by post using form WFP1. WFP is paid for 52 weeks from the date of your claim, after which you must reapply. It does not affect your other social welfare payments like Child Benefit.
DSP-Aligned: Uses 2025 Working Family Payment income limits and the 60% payment formula.
How WFP works, who qualifies, and how much you can receive
What is the Working Family Payment?
Working Family Payment (WFP) is a weekly tax-free payment for employees with children who earn below a certain amount. It is designed to make work pay for families on low incomes. It is paid in addition to your wages and any other social welfare payments. WFP was formerly called Family Income Supplement (FIS).
Who qualifies for Working Family Payment?
You must be an employee (not self-employed) working at least 38 hours per fortnight (19 hours per week). You must have at least one dependent child under 18 (or under 22 if in full-time education). Your average weekly family income must be below the income limit for your family size. Both one-parent and two-parent families can qualify.
How is the payment amount calculated?
WFP pays 60% of the difference between your family income and the income limit for your family size. For example, the 2025 limit for a family with 1 child is €591 per week. If your weekly income is €400, the gap is €191, and 60% of that is €114.60 per week. The income limits increase for each additional child.
What counts as family income?
Family income includes your gross weekly wages (before tax) and your spouse or partner’s gross wages. It also includes income from social welfare payments (except Child Benefit, which is excluded). Rental income, investments, and most other sources are also counted. Working Family Payment itself is not counted as income for the purposes of calculating other benefits.
How long does the payment last?
WFP is awarded for 52 weeks at a time, regardless of changes in your circumstances during that period. If you get a pay rise or your partner starts working, your WFP stays the same until the 52-week period ends. You need to reapply before the end of each period. If your income drops, you can ask for a reassessment before the 52 weeks are up.
Is Working Family Payment taxable?
No. WFP is completely tax-free. It is not counted as income for tax purposes and does not affect your tax credits or tax band. It is also not counted as means for most other social welfare payments. Receiving WFP can also qualify you for additional benefits like the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance.
Can I get WFP and other payments at the same time?
Yes. You can receive WFP alongside many other payments including One-Parent Family Payment, Jobseeker’s Transitional Payment, Disability Allowance (if working part-time), and Partial Capacity Benefit. You can also get Child Benefit, Medical Card, and GP Visit Card while receiving WFP. It is designed to top up your wages, not replace other supports.
How do I apply for Working Family Payment?
Fill in the WFP1 application form, available from your local Intreo Centre or online at welfare.ie. You need payslips for the last 4 to 6 weeks, your employer’s details, and your children’s birth certificates (or PPS numbers). Send the completed form to the WFP Section in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. Processing takes about 4 to 8 weeks.
