How much can I save with extra payments?
Even 100 euro extra per month can save you thousands in interest. For a 280,000 euro loan at 4.2% over 30 years, adding 100 euro per month saves roughly 30,000 euro in interest and cuts about 5 years off your loan.
Can I make extra payments on a fixed rate?
Most Irish lenders allow some level of overpayments on fixed-rate mortgages (typically up to 10% of the outstanding balance per year). Variable-rate mortgages usually allow unlimited extra payments. Check your mortgage terms.
Fixed or variable -- which should I choose?
Fixed rates give you certainty for a set period (2-10 years). Variable rates may be lower initially but can change. In a rising rate environment, fixing can protect you. Many borrowers start with a fixed rate and move to variable later.
