What is a bulletin de paie?
A bulletin de paie (payslip) is the mandatory document French employers must provide each month. It details gross salary, all employee and employer social contributions, net before tax, income tax withholding (PAS), and final net pay.
What is the PAS (prélèvement à la source)?
Since January 2019, French income tax is withheld at source by the employer. The rate is determined by the tax authorities based on your previous year's tax return. It appears as the last deduction on your payslip before net pay.
What is the difference between Tranche 1 and Tranche 2?
Tranche 1 (T1) covers salary up to the Social Security ceiling (€3,864/month in 2025). Tranche 2 (T2) covers salary between 1x and 8x the ceiling. Contribution rates differ significantly between the two tranches, especially for AGIRC-ARRCO retirement.
Why are employer contributions so high in France?
French employer contributions (~42% of gross) fund universal healthcare, generous retirement pensions, unemployment insurance, family benefits, and occupational accident coverage. This is one of the highest rates in Europe but provides comprehensive social protection.

What appears on a French payslip?
A French bulletin de paie shows: gross salary (salaire brut), employee social charges broken down by category (santé, retraite, chômage, CSG/CRDS), net salary before tax (net à payer avant impôt), income tax withheld (prélèvement à la source), and net salary after tax (net à payer). It also shows employer charges for information. Since 2018, payslips have been simplified into fewer categories.
How much do employee social charges take?
Employee social charges total about 22-25% of gross salary. The main components are: CSG/CRDS (9.7% of 98.25% of gross), retirement (about 4%), supplementary retirement (3-4%), and unemployment (0%). On a €3,000 gross salary, employee charges are about €660-€750, leaving about €2,250-€2,340 net before income tax.
When is salary paid in France?
French law requires salary to be paid at least once a month, on the same date each month. Most companies pay at the end of the month (le 25 ou le 30). Some pay on the first of the following month. Employers must provide the bulletin de paie on or before payday. Late payment can result in dommages et intérêts (damages) before the Prud'hommes.
What is the DSN?
The DSN (Déclaration Sociale Nominative) is the monthly electronic declaration every French employer must file. It replaces most social declarations and is sent to URSSAF, retirement funds, and other bodies. It contains each employee's gross pay, social charges, hours worked, and absences. The DSN is due by the 5th or 15th of the following month depending on company size.
How does prélèvement à la source work on payroll?
The employer receives each employee's personalised tax rate from the DGFiP and applies it to net taxable salary each month. If your rate is 10% and your net taxable pay is €2,500, €250 is withheld for income tax. New employees without a rate use the taux neutre (default rate based on salary level). Employees can request a taux individualisé for couples with income disparities.
What payroll obligations do employers have?
Employers must: register with URSSAF before the first hire, submit DSN monthly, pay employee and employer charges by the 5th or 15th, issue payslips, maintain a registre unique du personnel, provide an attestation employeur when an employee leaves, and file the DAS2 for fees paid to third parties over €1,200. Using a logiciel de paie (payroll software) or an expert-comptable is strongly recommended.
