Estimate your chèque énergie amount based on your household income (RFR) and household size.
The chèque énergie is sent automatically by mail each spring. No application is needed.
How does the chèque énergie work?
The chèque énergie is an annual aid sent automatically to eligible households each spring. It can be used to pay energy bills (electricity, gas, fuel oil, wood), or for energy renovation work. The amount ranges from €48 to €277 per year, depending on your income and household size.
What are the chèque énergie amounts for 2025?
Amounts depend on RFR per consumption unit (UC): For the lowest incomes (RFR/UC < €5,600): €194 (1 UC), €240 (1-2 UC), €277 (2+ UC). For moderate incomes (RFR/UC €7,700-€10,800): €48 (1 UC), €63 (1-2 UC), €76 (2+ UC). Approximately 5.8 million households receive it.
Who automatically receives the chèque énergie?
The chèque énergie is sent automatically based on your tax return. You do not need to apply. Eligibility is determined by your RFR (Revenu Fiscal de Référence) per consumption unit. If your RFR per UC is below €10,800, you are eligible. The cheque is mailed to your tax address each spring.
How can I use the chèque énergie?
You can use it to: (1) Pay energy bills directly by sending it to your supplier or registering online on chequeenergie.gouv.fr. (2) Pay for home energy improvements (insulation, heating). (3) Pay charges in social housing. The cheque is valid until March 31 of the following year.

How the chèque énergie and other energy support schemes work for French households
What is the chèque énergie?
The chèque énergie is an annual voucher sent automatically to low-income households to help pay energy bills (electricity, gas, heating oil, wood). In 2025, amounts range from €48 to €277 per year depending on your income and household size. You do not need to apply — the tax office identifies eligible households from tax returns.
Who qualifies for the chèque énergie?
Eligibility is based on your revenu fiscal de référence (RFR) per consumption unit (unité de consommation — UC). For a single person, your RFR must be below about €11,000. For a couple, below about €16,500. Each additional person adds 0.3 UC. About 5.6 million French households receive it. Students in their own home may also qualify.
What can you use the chèque énergie for?
You can use it to pay electricity, gas, heating oil, wood, or district heating bills. It can also be used for energy renovation works (insulation, heat pumps, new boilers) certified by a RGE (Reconnu Garant de l'Environnement) professional. Send the cheque to your energy supplier, who will credit your account.
What is MaPrimeRénov' for energy renovation?
MaPrimeRénov' is a government grant for home energy improvements. It covers insulation, heating upgrades, ventilation, and energy audits. Grants range from €300 for a thermostat to €10,000+ for a heat pump. The amount depends on your income level (blue, yellow, purple, or pink category) and the type of work. Apply on maprimerenov.gouv.fr before starting work.
Are there tax credits for energy-saving work?
MaPrimeRénov' has largely replaced the old CITE (Crédit d'Impôt pour la Transition Énergétique). However, some energy renovation work qualifies for reduced TVA at 5.5% instead of 20%. Installing solar panels may qualify for tax exemptions on electricity sold back to the grid. Check the ADEME website for current incentives.
What protection exists against energy price rises?
France maintains a bouclier tarifaire (tariff shield) that caps regulated electricity prices. The tarif réglementé de vente (TRV) set by the CRE limits how much suppliers can charge. Households on the tarif bleu (most common) are protected. Since 2023, gas prices have been deregulated, but the chèque énergie and social tariffs help cushion the impact for low-income households.
