Frequently Asked Questions

How do allocations familiales work in France?

Allocations familiales are paid by the CAF to families with at least 2 dependent children under 20 living in France. The amount depends on the number of children and household income. Since 2015, the benefit is means-tested with three income tiers: full rate, half rate, and quarter rate.

What are the income thresholds for 2025?

For 2 children: Full rate up to ~€74,966, half rate from €74,966 to ~€99,922, quarter rate above €99,922. Each additional child raises the thresholds by approximately €5,947. These thresholds are based on the N-2 reference income (revenus 2023 for payments in 2025).

How much per child for 2025?

At full rate: 2 children receive ~€141.99/month, 3 children ~€323.91/month, each additional child adds ~€181.92/month. A bonus of ~€71/month is added per child over 14 (except the eldest in a 2-child household).

What are the age conditions for allocations familiales?

Children must be under 20 years old and living in France. The child must be a dependent (student, apprentice, or earning less than 55% of SMIC if working). Benefits stop the month after the child turns 20. A "forfait allocation familiale" may continue for one year when a family drops from 2 to 1 child.

Understanding Family Allowances in France

How the CAF calculates your monthly family payments based on children and income

Who qualifies for allocations familiales?

Any household in France with at least two children under 20 qualifies. You do not need to be French — all legal residents are eligible. The CAF (Caisse d'Allocations Familiales) pays the allowance automatically once your children are registered.

How much is the basic allowance for two children?

For two children at the full rate, you receive about €142 per month. If your household income is between €74,966 and €99,922, the amount drops to half (around €71). Above €99,922, it drops to a quarter (about €36). A third child adds roughly €182 per month at the full rate.

What is the age bonus for children over 14?

When a child turns 14, you get an extra €71 per month added to the base allowance. However, for a family with only two children, the eldest child does not qualify for this bonus — only the youngest does. For families with three or more children, all children over 14 receive it.

How does household income affect the amount?

The CAF uses your net taxable income from two years ago (revenu net catégoriel N-2) to set your rate. There are three tiers: full rate, half rate, and quarter rate. The income thresholds increase by about €5,947 for each additional child. If your income changes significantly, the rate adjusts the following January.

When do allocations familiales stop?

Payments stop when a child turns 20, provided they are no longer considered a dependant. If the child works and earns more than 55% of the SMIC (about €1,047 per month in 2025), the allowance for that child stops earlier. The family must always have at least two qualifying children to receive the benefit.

Are allocations familiales taxable?

No. Allocations familiales are completely tax-free. You do not need to declare them on your annual income tax return. They are also not counted when calculating your eligibility for other means-tested benefits like the RSA or Prime d'activité.

How do you apply for allocations familiales?

You apply through your local CAF office or online at caf.fr. You will need your family record book (livret de famille), proof of address, and your tax reference number (numéro fiscal). Once registered, payments start the month after your second child is born or arrives in France.
