How are bonuses taxed in Australia?
In Australia, bonuses are treated as ordinary income and taxed at your marginal tax rate. There is no special "bonus tax" -- your bonus is simply added to your annual income and taxed progressively. However, because it pushes you higher in the tax brackets, the effective rate on the bonus is typically higher than on your regular salary.
Why does my bonus seem heavily taxed?
Your employer withholds PAYG tax from bonus payments using a special method (Method B of the ATO withholding schedule). This can result in higher withholding than your actual liability. Any over-withholding is refunded when you lodge your tax return.
Can I reduce tax on my bonus?
You can salary sacrifice part of your bonus into super (up to the $30,000 concessional cap). This means you pay 15% contributions tax instead of your marginal rate, potentially saving significantly on tax.
