What benefits does PRSI fund?
PRSI contributions build your entitlements to social welfare benefits including the State Pension (Contributory), Jobseeker's Benefit, Illness Benefit, Maternity Benefit, Paternity Benefit, and Treatment Benefit (dental, optical). The benefits you can claim depend on your PRSI class and contribution record.
Class A vs Class S
Class A is for employees earning €38 or more per week. It provides the widest range of benefits. Class S is for self-employed individuals and provides a more limited range of benefits. Both classes charge 4% on gross income.
Revenue-Aligned: Uses official Department of Social Protection PRSI rates for 2025. Consult a tax advisor for complex situations.
