Understanding Hong Kong Salary Tax

How salaries tax, allowances, deductions, standard rate, and MPF shape take-home pay.

How is Hong Kong salaries tax calculated?

The calculator compares progressive salaries tax on net chargeable income with the standard rate on net income, then uses the lower result.

What allowance is included?

It includes the basic personal allowance, or the married person allowance when selected. Other allowances are entered as additional deductions.

How does MPF affect take-home pay?

Employee MPF is deducted from salary and also treated as a deduction for this planning estimate, subject to the monthly contribution cap.

Why is the effective tax rate lower than the top rate?

Hong Kong uses allowances and progressive bands, so only income above allowances reaches higher rates.
