Understanding UAE Overtime Pay

What are UAE overtime rates?

Under UAE Labour Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 33/2021), overtime during normal hours (before 9pm) is paid at 25% above the normal hourly rate (1.25x). Overtime between 9pm and 4am is paid at 50% above the normal hourly rate (1.5x). Friday work (if it is a rest day) is compensated at 50% premium or a substitute rest day.

What is the maximum overtime hours allowed?

The UAE Labour Law limits overtime to 2 hours per day. In exceptional cases, overtime may extend beyond this, but total working hours including overtime should not exceed 144 hours over a 3-week period. Employers must keep records of all overtime worked.

How is the hourly rate calculated for overtime?

The base hourly rate is calculated by dividing the basic monthly salary by the total working hours per month. For a standard 48-hour week: basic salary / (48 x 4.33) = hourly rate. Overtime premium is then applied on top of this hourly rate.

Are there exemptions from overtime pay?

Yes, certain categories of employees may be exempt from overtime provisions, including those in supervisory or management positions. Additionally, overtime rules may not apply during Ramadan reduced hours, as those reduced hours are considered the standard for that period.

MOHRE-Aligned: Overtime rates are based on UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 on Regulation of Labour Relations. Actual rates may vary by employment contract and industry.
